As such, you should consider your Supervisor as the public contact for Van Buren Charter Township. The Supervisor is often the one contacted by the public to resolve problems, address concerns and requests, and explain Township policies and services. Walsh thanked Shoupe and township Development Coordinator Marita Stoerrle for their efforts in constantly reviewing and proposing revisions to township codes.The primary responsibility of Van Buren Charter Township’s Supervisor is to serve all residents. No questions or comments were received during a brief zoning hearing, and the board unanimously passed the ordinance enacting the new definition. The new definition “would not include institutional group living situations such as student housing, dormitories, fraternities, sororities, monasteries or nunneries,” Shoupe said. That updated code has been vetted and approved by the township and county planning commissions, Shoupe told the supervisors Monday night, and has been reviewed by township legal advisers for compliance with federal Fair Housing laws. The new code defines a family as any group living together to “share living expenses, chores, eat meals together, and are a close group with social, economic and psychological commitments to each other,” with facilities for residential care and the disabled considered families under the new code. ![]() To Chapter 230, Section 5 of the township code listing various definitions, to change the definition from one stating a family must be “related by blood, marriage or adoption” or live together as “a single nonprofit housekeeping unit.” Last month township Director of Planning and Zoning Bruce Shoupe initially proposed the amendment ![]() “This is part of our endeavors to make sure that our various code sections coordinate with one another, and are up to date with federal standards,” said township supervisor Joe Walsh. On Monday night, the township’s supervisors approved a proposal to update a definition on the township’s books since 1993, making the term “family” one defined by behavior rather than strictly by relationship. – A new definition of “family” is now officially part of Montgomery Township’s codebook. ![]()
